FIFA WC PORTUGAL TEAM: The Portuguese team has been making a name for themselves in the recent past, after years of playing well but never quite bagging the trophy.
After winning the Euros in 2016 in France, it seemed like that team was finally unleashed as they also went on to win the 2019 Nations League. Sadly though, this form of theirs has never quite translated in the World Cup as they were knocked out of the 2018 World Cup by Uruguay in the Round of 16.
Even in the Euro 2020, they only managed the Round of 16, before Belgium sent them packing. They’ll be looking to go much deeper this time around in Qatar.
FIFA WC PORTUGAL SQUAD: They have improved quite a lot after Fernando Santos took over at the helm in 2014 as just two years after that, they went on to triumph in the Euro 2016.
They have always been a team that has a lot of talented players but getting them to play together in cohesion was the lacking factor, adding to this the problem of how to utilize Ronaldo’s talents to the fullest. But they figured it out under Santos which saw them win two trophies.
It was not all smooth sailing as they faced a scare at the World Cup Qualifying phase, as they finished behind Serbia in their group and had to go through the knockout phase to book their place for the finals in Qatar. They faced Turkey and then North Macedonia in the final of the knockout game and ended up beating them 2-0 to finally make it to Qatar.
PORTUGAL TEAM NEWS: Cristiano Ronaldo’s team likes to play in a 4-2-3-1 formation with the mercurial striker at the top of the attack. The beauty of Portugal is that they can play keeping the ball with them and being patient, or can get to the opposition box in 4-5 touches, or can play the long ball if needed to bypass the middle of the pitch.
Bernardo Silva is a key component of this team as just like he does at Manchester City, he drops deep, closer to the CDM, and likes to puppeteer the team’s attack from deep positions. Cancelo and Mendes will also be important for them as they like to go up the field and overload the flanks.
Ronaldo has been out of form this season and him firing on all cylinders will be key in the search for goals at the top of the field.
PORTUGAL Team INJURY LIST: Portugal, sadly, has a number of their players with injuries and will be missing their services in Qatar. The biggest miss will perhaps be of striker Diogo Jota, as he suffered a calf muscle injury with Liverpool in a game against their arch-rivals Manchester City.
Striker Pedro Neto will also miss the tournament after suffering an ankle injury. Defender Ricardo Pereira will also be out due to an Achilles injury. Defenders Nuno Mendes and Pepe also have injuries but it seems that they will recover in time to make the squad.
FIFA WC PORTUGAL GROUP NEWS: Portugal shares Group H with Uruguay, South Korea, and Ghana in the 2022 WC in Qatar this time. They are considered the favorites to top this group.
FIFA WC PORTUGAL Matches & Schedule: Portugal will play their first game of the World Cup against Ghana on the 24th of November, followed by the game that everyone will be watching, their game against Uruguay on the 29th and their final game of the group stage will be versus South Korea on the 2nd of December.
