

Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023: Belgium has made a meteoric rise in world hockey in the last 10 years. The Red Lions began perennial ‘underdogs’ but went onto to become world champions in a little over a decade. They will becoming to India as the defending champions having lifted the trophy back in 2018. The world no 2 team have so far made six hockey World Cup appearances with 2018 edition being their best finish till date. The Tokyo Olympic gold medalist will look to retain the title this time around.

Belgium will begin their campaign against Korea on January 14 before taking on Germany in the second match. Both the matches will be played at Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneshwar. The defending champions will play their last match against Japan which will be held at Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela.

The veteran is a vastly experienced member of the Belgium’s men hockey team. The 34-year-old defender has featured in four Olympics – 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2021 as well as in two World Cups – 2014 and 2018. He is the most capped player for the team with 436.
Felix Denayer
The midfielder is one of the biggest names in Belgian field hockey. He helped his country win a silver medal at the Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, claim gold at the World Cup in 2018 and emerge as European Champions in 2019. Then, in 2021, he captained Belgium to a gold medal at the Games in Tokyo.

Belgium won the 2018 edition of the FIH World Cup in Bhubaneshwar. Belgium beat Netherlands in the final via a penalty shootout and was crowned champions for the first time.
