Career

Domestic career

During his Under-19 days in 2014, Deepak Hooda emerged as one of India’s standout players, showcasing his skills as a middle-order batsman who could also contribute with his right-arm off-spin. Despite not being a regular bowler, he demonstrated the ability to pick up crucial wickets when needed. Hooda’s journey began in 2009 when he represented the Kendriya Vidyalaya U-17 team at the age of 14, catching the eye of selectors with his performances in the School Games Federation India. This led to him receiving training at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Hooda’s talent flourished further in Baroda’s U17 and U19 age group teams, earning him a spot in India’s U19 World Cup squad for the 2014 edition in UAE. His stellar performance in the semi-final, where he remained unbeaten on 76 against Sri Lanka U19, earned him the Player of the Match award. Transitioning to domestic cricket, Hooda made his debut in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Baroda in 2013 before making his mark in first-class cricket in 2014. Notably, he became only the second player from Baroda to score a century on his first-class debut, smashing 114 against Bengal. In subsequent seasons, Hooda’s career witnessed ups and downs, including stints as captain for Baroda and a controversial departure from the team. However, he embarked on a new chapter with Rajasthan in the 2021-22 season, showcasing his talent with notable performances in domestic tournaments, ultimately earning him a maiden international call-up.

IPL Career

Deepak Hooda made his IPL debut with Rajasthan Royals in 2015, scoring 151 runs in 14 matches. He set a record for the fastest half-century for the team that season. Sunrisers Hyderabad acquired him for IPL 2016, banking on his big-hitting prowess. Despite high expectations, Hooda’s performance dipped, playing 61 matches without reaching 1000 runs, averaging 14.55 with a strike rate of 127.18. Transferred to Kings XI Punjab in 2020, he was later bought by Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2022. In the 2022 season, he amassed 451 runs in 15 games at an average of 32.31 and a strike rate of 136.61.

International career

In November 2017, Hooda earned a spot in India’s T20 International (T20I) squad for the series against Sri Lanka. In February 2018, he was named in the T20I squad for the 2018 Nidahas Trophy but did not feature in any matches. Subsequently, in December 2018, he was included in India’s team for the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup. In January 2022, Hooda was named in India’s One Day International (ODI) squad for the series against the West Indies, making his ODI debut in the same series. Following this, he was added to India’s T20I squad for the series against the West Indies and later for the series against Sri Lanka in February 2022, marking his T20I debut. In June 2022, Hooda was selected for India’s T20I series against Ireland, where he scored his maiden T20I century in the second match, forming the highest partnership for the second wicket in men’s T20I alongside Sanju Samson. Additionally, he was chosen for India’s squad for the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup.

ODI Career

After an impressive stint in domestic cricket spanning almost eight years, Deepak Hooda finally earned his maiden call-up to the national team for the ODI series against West Indies in February 2022. Hooda featured in the first two matches, contributing scores of 26 not out and 29, but was omitted from the final game. Although he missed out on selection for the ODI series against England in July 2022, Hooda returned to the squad later that month for three ODIs against West Indies, scoring 27 and 33 in the first two matches. However, he did not get a chance to bat in the third game. In the subsequent ODI series versus Zimbabwe in August, Hooda batted at No.5 but managed scores of 25 and 1. Following the T20 World Cup, Hooda toured New Zealand, where he had limited batting opportunities, registering just 12 runs in the final match in Christchurch after being unable to bat in the preceding game in Hamilton.

T20 International Career

Following his ODI debut, Hooda quickly joined India’s T20I squad for the Sri Lanka series, featuring in all three matches and contributing 21 runs in his debut innings. After an impressive IPL season with Lucknow Super Giants, he starred in the T20I series in Ireland, scoring a crucial unbeaten 47 in the first match and a sensational century in the second. Against England, Hooda managed 33 runs in the first match but made way for Virat Kohli in the subsequent games. He played three matches against the West Indies, accumulating 69 runs. Despite modest performances in the Asia Cup Super 4 round, he secured a spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad. However, a back injury sidelined him for the home T20Is against Australia and South Africa. Hooda returned for the T20 World Cup but featured in just one game against South Africa, followed by a standout bowling performance in the second T20I against New Zealand. In the first T20I against Sri Lanka in 2023, he scored 41 off 23 balls, contributing to India’s thrilling victory.
