Wankhede Stadium
Mumbai Cricket Association Ground · Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
Wankhede Stadium, nestled in the heart of Churchgate, Mumbai, is one of India’s most iconic and storied cricket venues. Built in 1974 and managed by the Mumbai Cricket Association, it seats over 33,000 spectators and has witnessed some of the game’s most unforgettable moments — including India’s triumphant 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup final victory. Home to the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, Wankhede is renowned for its sea-breeze conditions, batting-friendly pitches, and an electric atmosphere generated by passionate Mumbai fans who pack the stands for every international fixture and marquee T20 clash.
Situated in the financial capital of India, Mumbai, the Wankhede Stadium is an international cricket stadium and the home ground of the Mumbai Cricket Team and IPL franchise Mumbai Indians. Following renovations for the 2011 World Cup, the stadium now has a capacity of 33,108.
The offices of the BCCI, IPL, Mumbai Cricket Association headquarters, and Cricket Centre are also inside the stadium premises. It is situated near the Marine Drive in the Churchgate area of South Mumbai, Maharashtra. Going by the field area, the Wankhede is one of the smallest stadiums in the world.
The stadium has hosted plenty of high-profile matches, notably the 2011 World Cup Final between India and Sri Lanka. Also, the Wankhede witnessed the farewell of Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, who played his last Test match against the West Indies here in November 2013.
The ground has hosted a total of 27 tests, 27 ODIs, and 9 T20Is, featuring Team India and other teams. The ground is relatively younger than some of the older grounds in India, like the Eden Gardens in Kolkata or the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
