Born on November 23, 1990, in Gujarat, Patel is a right-arm medium-fast bowler and a handy lower-order batsman. He made his debut in first-class cricket for Haryana in the 2011-2012 season and quickly established himself as a key player in the team.

One of Patel’s standout moments came during the 2014-2015 Ranji Trophy season when he emerged as the leading wicket-taker for Haryana. His consistent performances earned him a call-up to the IPL, where he made his debut for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2012. However, it was during his stint with the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2018 that Patel truly showcased his potential as a wicket-taking bowler.

In the 2021 IPL season, Patel made headlines with his exceptional bowling for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He finished as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, claiming 32 wickets in 15 matches, and was awarded the prestigious Purple Cap for his outstanding performance.

Career

Domestic career

Harshal Patel’s cricket journey began with notable achievements in his youth, where he took 23 wickets at an impressive average of 11 in the 2008-09 Under-19 Vinoo Mankad Trophy. Despite making his one-day debut for Gujarat in 2009-10, he didn’t find favor with the state selectors for the first-class side. Undeterred, Patel moved to Haryana, where he made an immediate impact in his debut Ranji Trophy season in 2011-12, particularly notable for his consecutive eight-fors in the quarter-final and semi-final matches against Karnataka and Rajasthan.

In the 2019 Ranji Trophy season, Patel’s performance was sensational, claiming 52 wickets in 9 games, thereby breaking a 36-year-old Haryana record. Additionally, he showcased his batting prowess by amassing 292 runs at an average of 22.46, primarily batting at No. 8.

In T20 cricket, Patel demonstrated versatility by opening the batting and accumulating 374 runs at an average of 31.17 in 12 games during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Despite initial setbacks, Patel’s resilience and talent have seen him evolve into a formidable all-rounder in domestic cricket, leaving a significant mark on the cricketing landscape.

IPL Career

In the 2010 IPL auction, Mumbai Indians acquired Harshal Patel for Rs. 8 lakhs, but he didn’t get a chance to play. Later, he joined Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2012 but was often seen as a backup rather than a primary seamer. His breakthrough came in the 2015 season, where he played 15 matches and claimed 17 wickets. In 2018, he moved to Delhi Capitals and was retained for IPL 2020 due to his consistent performances in domestic cricket. Despite limited opportunities with Delhi Capitals, Patel’s fortunes changed dramatically with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021. He emerged as the top wicket-taker in the season with 32 wickets and maintained an impressive economy rate. Retained by RCB for the latest season, Patel continued his fine form, securing 19 wickets with an economy rate of 7.66. He was bought lby Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2024 Auction.

International career

In November 2021, Harshal Patel earned a spot in India’s T20I squad for their series against New Zealand. He made his T20I debut on November 19, 2021, against New Zealand, where he impressed by taking two wickets and was awarded the player of the match. Patel continued his success in the series, concluding with four wickets in two matches. Subsequently, in June 2022, Patel was included in India’s T20I squad for the series against Ireland.

T20 International Career

Harshal Patel made his international debut during the 2021 New Zealand-India T20I series, impressing with his bowling by dismissing Glenn Philips and Darryl Mitchell in his first match. He continued to shine in subsequent matches, displaying a commendable economy rate despite being a death bowler. In 2022, he featured in series against Sri Lanka, West Indies, Proteas, England, and Australia, displaying varying performances. While he struggled with inconsistency and faced injury setbacks, Patel showcased moments of brilliance, including taking four wickets against South Africa. However, his performances fluctuated throughout the series, culminating in mixed results. Patel’s selection for international matches reflects his potential, yet he grapples with maintaining consistent form and overcoming challenges on the international stage.
