Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023: Spain, just like India, has been a constant feature at the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup since its inception in 1971. In fact, the first hockey world cup was hosted by Spain. The team is currently ranked 8th in the world, as per the FIH rankings, with a total of 2120.35 points. Spain’s performances in outdoor field hockey have declined in the recent past, but they are still considered a very dangerous team going into the World Cup.

3 star players
Alvaro Iglesias: Midfielder/Forward
As the senior member of the Spanish side in terms of total matches played (180), 29-year-old Alvaro Iglesias forms the backbone of the midfield and forward line for Spain. He has scored 43 goals for Spain so far in his illustrious career and brings the flexibility that his country requires in highly competitive match situations.
Ricardo Sanchez: Defender
30-year-old Ricardo Sanchez is Spain’s lifeline when it comes to defense and their most experienced member too. He has featured in 124 matches for Spain and his country has won 67 of them. He has also scored 10 goals for Spain.
Enrique Gonzalez: Forward
Having made his debut in 2014, Enrique Gonzalez has been an important member of the Spanish side. He has played 153 matches and Spain has won 86 of them. He has also scored 20 goals for Spain so far and would like to add a few more against his name in the upcoming FIH men’s hockey world cup.
Best finish in WC: 1971 World Cup – Runners up/ 1998 World Cup – Runners up
Spain knows how to win big matches, but unfortunately have failed to win the final of the World Cup twice. In 1971, as the hosts of the World Cup, they lost 1-0 to Pakistan in the final. In 1998, when the tournament was hosted by the Netherlands, it was the host nation who won the tournament, on the basis of the final standings.
Previous appearance: 2018 World Cup – Finished 13th
Spain’s last appearance at the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup in India five years ago resulted in a disaster. The team failed to make it to the knockout rounds and finished in 13th place. Spain played three matches in Pool A, drew a couple of them, and lost one, finishing as the wooden spooners.
