England's Brydon Carse caught ball tampering against India during Manchester Test

Carse was hit for two boundaries by Shubman Gill, after which he was caught trying to tamper with the ball.

Ball tampering. This might be considered the biggest offence in all of cricket. Kagiso Rabada didn’t get an ounce of hate from people after failing a drug test compared to what Steve Smith, David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft got. Not only were the Australian players handed long bans, but they were also shunned by many in the cricket community.

England caught ball tampering

Fans all over the globe still sledge Smith for that one incident. Well, the biggest moralist of the sport, England, have been caught doing something similar. England’s big and bustling fast bowler Brydon Carse was caught ball tampering.

After being hit for a couple of boundaries in the 12th over by Indian captain Shubman Gill, Carse intentionally stepped on the ball to change the shape of the ball. The new Dukes was hooping around for a while, but by the time Carse was introduced in the 10th over, the movement had diminished significantly.

Carse stopped the ball in his follow-through with his leg. That wasn’t bad. It’s something many bowlers do. However, instead of trying to grab it by bending down or kicking it up like footballers do, he pushed down on the ball.

Ricky Ponting noticed this. Carse wasn’t trying to stop a boundary or single. It was evident that it was an attempt to scuff up one side of the ball. The ball wasn’t doing much anymore, and spin was to be introduced soon. By roughing up one side, England could bring reverse swing into the game. And Carse was doing just that by pushing his spikes into the ball.

“This is from Brydon Carse’s last over. This is something he does in his follow-through here. Stops the ball and does it, oops. A couple of big spikes into the shiny side of the ball,” Ponting was heard saying live on Sky Sports Cricket.
