In the past Chennai has played host to the famous Chennai Open in the ATP tour that has attracted strat players like Carlos Moya and Rafael Nadal. However the tournament was scrapped from the calendar in 2017 and since then India has been devoid of any ATP or WTA Tour level tournament however this year, a new WTA 250 event was scheduled in the calendar, marking the return of a WTA tournament in India after a gap of 14 years. The WTA Chennai Open is set to be held in the city till the 18th of September 2022 (Sunday).
The tournament has attracted players like world number 29, Alison Riske-Amritraj, world number 60, Varvara Gracheva, world number 70, Magda Linette, former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard and Wimbledon semifinalist this year Tatjana Maria. From India, two wildcard entries were granted to India’s No.1 Ankita Raina and Karman Kaur Thandi.
Alison Riske was the top seed, however she faced first round defeat to Anastasia Gasanova in the first round of the tournament. Another big upset victory in the first round was registered by India’s Karman Kaur Thandi who defeated eighth seed Chloe Paquet. However India’s Ankita Raina has bowed out of the tournament after losing 0-6, 1-6 against Tatjana Maria. In the second round all eyes will be on Thandi as she faces former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard.
