BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has ended his silence on the futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli amid rumours over their retirement

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajeev Shukla has broken his silence on the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Over the last few weeks, there has been a lot of speculation on the duo’s path ahead, with reports even claiming that the ODI series against Australia in October could be their last. While both Rohit and Virat retired from T20Is in 2024 after winning the WC, the veterans took the world by surprise when they announced abrupt retirements from Test in May 2025.

BCCI ends silence on Virat, Rohit

In a video shared on UPT20’s X handle, the BCCI vice-president categorically stated that the board will not ask either Rohit or Virat to retire and that it was their clear cut policy. He said that there was no need to worry about their futures as they were still active in ODIs and had not announced their retirements yet.

They haven’t retired, haven’t they? Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are both playing One-Dayers. They haven’t taken retirement, so why are you talking and worrying about their farewell? Retirement from two formats, that’s the phases, but they are still playing ODIs. Don’t worry this much. BCCI policy is quite clear; we won’t ask anyone to retire, they have to make their decisions themselves. He has to take that call, and we respect that,” Rajeev Shukla said

The BCCI vice-president further slammed those asking for a farewell match to be arranged for Ro-Ko. Shukla pointed out that while Kohli was till very fit, Rohit was playing well and that there was no point talking about their farewell for now.

We’ll cross the bridge when we come to it. You are already arranging their farewell! Virat Kohli is very fit, and Rohit Sharma plays very well. Why are you worried about their farewell?,” Shukla added.
