Travis Head is likely to captain Australia cricket team in AUS vs SL Test series if Steve Smith doesn’t recover on time. The former Australian skipper suffered an elbow injury while training during the Big Bash League (BBL), leaving his participation in the upcoming series in doubt. Smith was named captain in the absence of Pat Cummins who will miss the series due to the birth of his second child and due to ankle soreness.
Travis Head as captain for AUS vs SL Tests?
Travis Head was elevated as vice-captain last year after he cemented his position as a regular in Australia’s XI. He served as Cummins’ deputy in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy where India were handed a 3-1 thrashing at the hands of the hosts. While Smith is expected to join the rest of the side later this week, further details on the extent of his injury are awaited. Should he skip the series, then Head will don the captain’s hat.

Head has already been named Smith’s deputy for Sri Lanka tour which means he will take over the reins in the absence of Smith. Australia have already qualified for the World Test Championship (WTC) final and will lock horns with South Africa at Lord’s in June. The Aussies are the defending WTC champions, having defeated India in the final of the previous cycle. They will be aiming to crush Sri Lanka as they eye to carry on with the winning momentum.
“Smith is preparing to join the test squad in Dubai later this week following further specialist input. Further updates will be shared as they are known,” said an Australian Press release.
