There has been a lot of chatter about who will be India’s next ODI captain after Rohit Sharma. Some reports had earlier claimed that Shreyas Iyer could be a potential option but BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia claimed that no such discussions had taken place. Shubman Gill, who is currently India’s Test captain and T20I vice-captain, is expected to succeed Rohit and now a report has all but confirmed the same.
Gill only option to replace Rohit as ODI captain
As per RevSportz, it is all but certain that Gill will take over the mantle from Rohit when the time comes. The report claims that there is no other contender for the position at the moment. In addition, the report states that split captaincy prevailing at present is only because of the ongoing transition phase and that Gill is expected to be the all-format captain in the future.
Shubman was named Rohit’s deputy in the Champions Trophy 2025 where India emerged victorious. Thereafter, he led Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025 before being named India’s Test captain for the IND vs ENG Test series. The decision was made after Sharma announced his abrupt decision to retire from Tests just before the tour.
Gill had a rather successful first outing as the Test captain, leading India to a 2-2 result in England, apart from being the top run-getter for the side. He will next be seen in action in Asia Cup 2025, where he returns to T20Is after over an year and will be Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy.
What next for Rohit?
On the other hand, there is uncertainty over Rohit’s future in ODIs. Despite the fact that he is active only in the 50-over format, reports in the past have claimed that the series against Australia in October could be his last. This is in addition to reports claiming that Sharma might have to play in Vijay Hazare Trophy in order to stay in contention for a spot in the ODI side. Meanwhile, on Sunday, a report has stated that Rohit, along with Virat Kohli, are likely to play in the India A one-day games against Australia A before the Australia tour.
