For over 15 years, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have carried Indian cricket on their shoulders, setting the gold standard in batting. They have truly been the pillars of the modern-day Indian cricket, taking the Men in Blue into a smooth transitional period post the Sachin Tendulkar era. However, as the next generation steps forward, one name stands out—Shubman Gill.
Shubman Gill the Poster Boy!
Shubman Gill, the elegant right-hander from Punjab, has taken the cricketing world by storm. With a rock-solid technique and a poetry-like stroke-making, Gill has established himself as a vital cog in India’s batting lineup.
The comparisons to Virat Kohli haven’t eluded him either. His impressive showings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have further cemented his reputation as a batting sensation. But what’s equally impressive is Gill’s leadership acumen. As the captain of the Gujarat Titans (GT), he has led from the front with aplomb, earning the admiration of fans and teammates alike, including England’s Jos Buttler.
Buttler’s high praise for Gill
The former England captain, who joined GT for Rs 15.75 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, has been in sensational form, scoring two half-centuries in three matches. After his unbeaten 73 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Buttler lauded Gill’s leadership and batting prowess.
“Look, Shubman is a star, isn’t he? He is going to be the poster boy of Indian cricket. I think he is a fantastic player. I have really enjoyed it. I think one of the great things with the IPL is that I have played against these guys. But now I get to watch him up close and be on my team,” Buttler said to Cricbuzz.
“I really like watching him practise and learning things about how he goes about it. He has led the team brilliantly. He has got a nice relationship with the whole team. And he and the coach get on well. And yeah, he has got that passion on the field which I love and also a clear, calm head. So he is doing a fantastic job as leader.”
Gill, currently the No. 1 ranked ODI batter, has already cemented his place as one of India’s brightest stars. It was fascinating to hear Buttler wax lyrical about Gill’s leadership role, especially since he’s on the forefront to captain India in a near future too!
