Rohit Sharma’s childhood coach Dinesh Lad has claimed that the Hitman’s decision to retire from Tests abruptly wasn’t a hasty decision. With just a little over a month left for the Test series against England, the Hitman took fans by surprise by deciding to call it a day in Tests. Incidentally, just weeks before, Sharma had told Michael Clarke on a podcast that he would give it his best in England.

Speaking to news agency PTI, Lad explained that Rohit’s decision was taken in the best interest of the team. He claimed that it had nothing to do with the upcoming series against England.
“He didn’t take the decision in a hurry. It’s not that he retired because of his form. He must have thought carefully about what was best for him. This decision has nothing to do with the upcoming tour of England. The main thought would have been to give the next generation a chance,” Lad said.
Further, Rohit’s childhood coach opined that he wants the Hitman to retire from ODIs only after he wins the World Cup in 2027. Sharma had retired from T20Is earlier in 2024 after leading India to the World Cup win. Lad admitted that Rohit had set his eyes on the WTC mace but had failed to lay his hands on it.
“His target was the World Test Championship, but unfortunately we didn’t qualify. Now, it’s the 2027 World Cup. I also want him to win the 2027 World Cup and then retire,” Lad added.
