Jadeja opens up on leadership dreams days after Gill is named Test captain

Ravindra Jadeja has admitted that he wishes to captain the Indian Test team, labelling it as a moment of pride

Ravindra Jadeja aspires to be India cricket team’s Test captain and he minced no words in conveying his opinion. The veteran’s remarks come just days after Shubman Gill was named as Rohit Sharma’s successor in the red-ball format. Following the retirement of Rohit and Virat Kohli, Jadeja is now one of the most experienced players who will be a part of the Test team for the upcoming series in England.

Jadeja wants to be Test captain

In a conversation with Ravichandran Ashwin, Jadeja admitted that the only thing that is left for him to achieve is to lead India in Tests. He labelled it as a moment of pride if he got the chance to captain the Test team.

Just one thing is left. Test captaincy. I’ve mostly achieved everything else, and it is a moment of pride to be Test Captain or lead India,” Jadeja said.

Having played 80 Tests so far, the all-rounder is a must-have in India’s playing XI for all Tests. He would have been the best choice for vice-captain, if not the skipper. However, the selectors looked the other way and decided to name Rishabh Pant as Gill’s deputy. Jadeja has no hard feeling about being snubbed from captaincy.

Captaincy is something that can be learned with time… But I believe that an experienced cricketer understands the pulse of the game,” Jadeja added.

Jadeja has never captained the Indian team in Tests. His most notable yet short reign as captain came in 2022 for CSK where he was replaced mid-way. Earlier this year, Jadeja refused to lead Saurashtra in the second leg of Ranji Trophy despite participating in a few matches.

Subman Gill-led India will take on England in a five-match Test series that commences from June 20. The series will mark the start of a new era sans Ro-Ko.
