Vignesh Puthur, a 24-year-old cricketer from India, is gaining attention for his exceptional left-arm wrist-spin bowling, also known as ‘chinaman’. Born on March 2, 2001, in Perinthalmanna, Malappuram, Kerala, Puthur has quickly become a promising talent in Indian cricket.
Early Life and Cricketing Beginnings
Growing up in Malappuram, Puthur’s interest in cricket began at the age of 11, when he played informal street matches with his friends. Initially, he bowled medium pace and spin, but his passion for spin bowling grew under the mentorship of Mohammed Sherif, a local club cricketer. By the age of 14, Puthur joined the Malappuram District Cricket Academy, where coach Vijayan helped him refine his wrist-spin bowling technique.
Domestic Cricket Journey
Puthur’s domestic cricket career saw him represent Kerala at various age-group levels, including the Under-14, Under-19, and Under-23 teams. He also played for Jolly Rovers Cricket Club in the Kerala College Premier T20 league. During the first season of the Kerala Cricket League (KCL) in 2024, Puthur made a notable impact, taking three wickets in two matches for the Alleppey Ripples.
The IPL Breakthrough
Despite his limited experience at the senior level, Puthur’s unique left-arm wrist-spin style captured the attention of scouts from Mumbai Indians (MI) during the KCL. He impressed senior MI players, including Hardik Pandya, and head coach Mahela Jayawardene during trials. This eventually led to his acquisition by Mumbai Indians for ₹30 lakh at the 2025 IPL auction.
Personal Background
Puthur comes from a modest background; his father, Sunil Kumar P, works as an auto driver, while his mother, K.P. Bindhu, is a homemaker. Outside of cricket, he enjoys activities like swimming, traveling, and going to the gym. Puthur looks up to Kuldeep Yadav as an idol, although his bowling action remains distinct from that of Yadav’s. In addition, Puthur has a deep affection for animals, particularly dogs and cats.
Puthur’s rapid rise from local cricket to the IPL is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and raw talent. With his unique bowling style and impressive potential, he is fast becoming one of the most promising prospects in Indian cricket.
