Pakistan selection committee snub, steep salary ask: Why Jason Gillespie resigned as Test coach

As per reports, Jason Gillespie was unhappy after being snubbed from the selection committee and hence resigned as Pakistan's Test coach

Pakistan cricket team Test coach Jason Gillespie was reportedly unhappy with being snubbed from the selection committee and hence decided to resign. The Australian decided to part ways with the team just 8 months after he was roped in as the red-ball coach. Pakistan once again find themselves without a coach, despite naming Aaqib Javed as the interim coach.

Why did Jason Gillespie resign as Pakistan Test coach?

As per Cricket Pakistan, Jason Gillespie was reportedly unhappy after being removed from the selection committee. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had earlier decided to curtail the power of both coach and captain in selection matters midway through the PAK vs ENG series and instead decided to give full authority to the revamped selection committee. Additionally, the Australian wanted to take over as the all-format coach and had demanded an increase in salary which was refused by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

Further, the report states that Gillespie was unwilling to accept the PCB’s demand for him to spend more time in Pakistan. Interestingly, former Pakistan white-ball coach Gary Kirsten had also expressed similar reservations following which he decided to step down. The report added that the Australian had threatened to resign if his demands weren’t accepted.

Gillespie refused to travel to South Africa with the team for the upcoming Test series and instead submitted his resignation to the PCB. Reports had earlier stated that the Australian was also kept in the dark over the PCB refusing to extend the contract of high-performance coach Tim Nielsen, who was also one of Gillespie’s recommendations.

While Gillespie led Pakistan as the stand-in coach for the white-ball series in Australia, he was expected to continue his duties as the red-ball coach in the series against South Africa. However, Aaqib Javed will now lead the side as interim coach as Pakistan look for a replacement for Gillespie.
