“Mumbai cha raja” to become “Wankhede cha raja”? Stand at Wankhede could be named after Rohit Sharma

"Mumbai cha raja" to become "Wankhede cha raja"? Stand at Wankhede could be named after Rohit Sharma

Apart from Rohit Sharma, other names under consideration are that of former MCA presidents and even former India players.

To get a stand or a pavilion in your name, at a home stadium is something really huge for any cricketer. And Rohit Sharma could be the next in line to get that honour, albeit at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. But there is a catch; the fight to get the name up will be a tough one. and as per a report in the Indian Express, several members of the MCA have come up with requests.

Wankhede to Have Rohit Sharma Stand?

The report suggests that there have been suggestions to honour past presidents Sharad Pawar, late Vilasrao Deskhmukh, Ajit Wadekar, Eknath Solkar, Dilip Sardesai, Diana Edulji, and of course Rohit Sharma. “There have been suggestions from members and the final decision will be taken by the general body members of the Mumbai Cricket Association,” MCA president Ajinkya Naik said.

Rohit’s name could be discussed at length, since apart from his batting accolades, he led India to the 2023 World Cup final, 2024 T20 World Cup win, and now the 2025 Champions Trophy triumph. Meanwhile, the name of the selected person would be put up on one unattributed Grand Stand over the president’s box.

Big Names to Consider for MCA

The East Stand though, is named after Sunil Gavaskar. The West Stand is named after Vijay Merchant, North has been named after Dilip Vengsarkar and Sachin Tendulkar. The media gallery is named after Bal Thackeray. But one of the troubles that MCA faces is, with so many requests pouring in, there aren’t many avenues left to honour the great personalities.

According to the MCA rules, the naming of the stand will only take place after the AGM’s approval, that is supposed to take place on April 15.
