IPL 2026: 'Flop show' Glenn Maxwell's release from PBKS inevitable, misery with bat ensues

Glenn Maxwell's miserable form with the bat might just force Punjab Kings (PBKS) to release him ahead of IPL 2026 mini-auction

Australia cricket team batter Glenn Maxwell is simply unable to break free from shackles of poor form and this could ultimately lead to the end of his IPL career. Barring a few good knocks in BBL 2024/25 and MLC 2025, the middle-order batter has performed miserably with the bat in both T20Is and T20s. Should his poor form with the bat ensue, his current IPL franchise Punjab Kings – who bought him for Rs 4.20 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction – won’t think twice before releasing him ahead of the mini-auction later this year.

End of the road in IPL drawing closer for Maxwell?

Maxwell’s latest failure in T20I came in the AUS vs SA 1st T20I in Darwin on Sunday. Coming out to bat at number 7, the ‘Big Show’ managed to score just 1 run before he was sent packing by Senuran Muthuswamy. Prior to this game, he was a part of the five-match series against West Indies. There too, Maxwell struggled to perform, registering scores of 11, 12, 20, 47 and 0.

Over the last 12 months, Maxwell has failed to score even a single half-century across all formats of the game (ODI and T20I). His highest score is 47 runs and he averages just 15.62 (in white-ball formats) during this period. In T20s, he has been slightly better but extremely inconsistent.

In 37 T20s played in the last 12 months, Maxwell has 780 runs at an average of 27.85, including a highest score of an unbeaten 106-run knock that came in MLC 2025. He has been able to go past 50 runs only on 3 out of 33 occasions in this period, although he has stayed unbeaten every time he goes past the half-century.

Talking about his form in IPL, Maxwell was released by RCB after IPL 2024 where he managed to score just 52 runs from 10 matches. Despite his poor form, he was picked up by PBKS in the mega auction, only to let the team down. Maxwell scored 48 runs from 7 matches in IPL 2025 before a finger injury saved him of the blues and ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament.

Should Maxwell’s poor form continue, PBKS won’t hesitate to release him, free up their purse and look for another reliable talent in their batting order.
