In life after IPL, player cum coaching role is what R Ashwin seeks

R Ashwin was an IPL stalwart in every way, where he went on to play 221 matches and picked up 187 wickets in them.

Recent retirement of R Ashwin, this time from the IPL isn’t shocking. First there reports of his trade, then about his non-retention, which made it amply clear that it might be his last season. But few days back, the ex-player bid adieu to league cricket in India as well.

R Ashwin to Play Other Foreign Leagues?

Coaching job is what R Ashwin seeks now, but with a twist. He doesn’t want to be the coach alone, but play as well. And that means, he could be seen in leagues outside India, playing and coaching sides now. In his latest episode of Ash Ki Baat, the 38-year-old opened up on his future plans.

“Actually, when I used to play for Rajasthan Royals, I have broached this topic, ‘can you coach, while playing’. We did speak about it, but it didn’t go anywhere. Look, RR is the first team where Shane Warne became the first captain, coach cum player. We had a conversation regarding it, but it didn’t materialise,” Ashwin said.

Had Explored Opportunity with Rajasthan Royals

In IPL, now that he is retired, it is particularly difficult to do with so many coaches part of the setup. “There was Sangakkara as the director of cricket.. To explore that in the IPL is quite tough. Maybe somewhere else, if I’m playing another league, that might happen. I will learn a lot that way. For the last two years, I have done that in TNPL — there is a lot of difference of course — I’ve learnt a lot there as well. Players are not IPL level, so the work is much more,” he added.
