Shubman Gill slammed a fighting century as he led Punjab’s fight back in KAR vs PUN clash in the second leg of Ranji Trophy. After falling for just 4 runs in the 1st innings, the PUN captain played a lone-warrior’s knock to save the side from the blues. The opener managed to finally break free from the shackles of poor form that has been bothering him for many months now.
Gill outshines other Indian stars with ton
While the likes of Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer and Rahane failed to score, Gill let his bat do the talking in the 2nd innings of the game at M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru. Departing from his usual approach, the Punjab opener played a very patient knock to get to the triple-figure mark. At one point, Gill had managed to make just 8 runs despite facing 45 deliveries. It was only after lunch that he decided to step on the gas, getting to his fifty in the first ball after the break. Gill’s century came off 159 deliveries, studded with 14 fours and three sixes.

Gill kept going even as batters walked in and out of the pavilion on the other end. The Punjab batter had last featured in Ranji Trophy in the 2018-19 season. Since then, he has gone on to become an all-format player for the Men in Blue that saw him neglect domestic cricket. While he is arguably one of the best batters in India at the moment, his form has seen a dip in the recent years. Especially in Tests. In his last 13 Test innings, Gill has registered scores of 50+ only on two occasions. In Australia, he failed to convert good starts into decent knocks, letting down the middle-order.
Punjab still have a tall task at hand in the game against Karnataka. After being bundled out for just 55 runs in the 1st innings, Gill and co. allowed KAR to amass 475 runs, thanks to a double century from Smaran Ravichandran. With just over a day left in the contest, a win is not on the cards surely for Punjab. But they will fight it out for a draw, provided Gill sticks around.
