DRS, July 6: Shubman Gill matches Gavaskar, Suryavanshi smashes record ton, IND vs BAN postponed

Welcome to our special segment, DRS or the Daily Review System. In this, InsideSport will provide you with the top cricket stories from July 5 that you might have missed in the hustle and bustle of your busy life.

DRS, July 6: Saturday was a day of records. Shubman Gill and Vaibhav Suryavanshi both etched their names in history books with sensational centuries in England. Gill matches Sunil Gavaskar’s record of scoring a double century and a century in both innings of a Test match in the IND vs ENG Edgbaston Test. 14-year-old Suryavanshi slammed the fastest ton in a Youth ODI against England U19 as India U19 clinched the series. In other news, Kochi Blue Tigers splashed Rs 26.80 lakh for Sanju Samson out of their Rs 50 lakh salary cap at KCL 2025 Auction.

However, in some bad news, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s return to cricket has been delayed as the BCCI announced the postponement of IND vs BAN white-ball series in August. Virat Kohli also ended his social media exile to post an appreciation story for his young apprentice, Shubman Gill.

In Birmingham, Team India are 7 wickets away from winning a Test a Edgbaston for the first time. In 8 attempts, India have a record of 0-7 with England winning 7 out of 8 matches. Only one match has ended in a draw since 1967. However, Shubman Gill & Co are in the driver’s seat at the end of Day 4, needing 7 wickets to win the Test and end a 58-year jinx. India won at the Gabba, Brisbane in 2021 to end a jinx. Akash Deep and Mohd Siraj dismissed Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett and Joe Root to reduce England to 72/3 at Day 4 close after Shubman Gill’s 161 helped India set a 608-run target for England.

All hail King Shubman Gill!

Shubman Gill scripted history at Edgbaston in the IND vs ENG 2nd Test. After a sensational 269-run knock in the first innings, India’s new Test captain followed it up with a 161-run knock in the second innings. With that, he joined Sunil Gavaskar to become the second Indian batter to score a double century and a century in a Test match. Gill scored 430 runs in the Edgbaston Test. It was second second-highest aggregate in a Test match after Graham Gooch’s 456 runs against India at Lord’s in 1990.

Gill-Jadeja bore Edgbaston crowd

Jadeja might be averaging 242.00 with the ball, but the batter is also averaging 97.00. The all-rounder followed up his 89-run knock in the first innings with an unbeaten 69-run knock in the 2nd innings. Jadeja stitched together a 175-run stand with Gill. However, the Edgbaston crowd was not happy as they booed India, chanting, “boring, boring”. India had already taken a 500-run lead, but India’s tactics to outbat England and stretch the lead to 600+ did not impress the Edgbaston crowd.

One Bat Flew Over the Fielder’s Head

Rishabh Pant’s dismissal in the 2nd innings could read a little differently. Rishabh Pant c Duckett b Shoaib Bashir bat Brydon Carse. In his 58-ball stay, Pant entertained everyone, including England fans, as he hammered 65, laced with 8 fours and 3 sixes. But twice during his stay, the bat flew towards square leg. When he was dismissed by Shoaib Bashir, the ball went to long-off, and the bat went to square leg. In the process, Pant also moved closer to surpassing Virender Sehwag (90) and Rohit Sharma (88) for most sixes by a batter in Test cricket. Pant has 86 sixes.

No IND vs BAN series, No Ro-Ko!

The BCCI and the BCB, in a joint statement, announced the postponement of the IND vs BAN white-ball series set for August. The series will now take place in September of 2026. With diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh deteriorating since the Shaikh Haseena government’s fall in 2024, the government of India did not see it fit for India to travel to Bangladesh, a hostile neighbour.

Sanju Samson, King of Kochi

If Virat Kohli is the King in the north, Sanju Samson has to be the King in the south. As he entered the KCL 2025 2025 auction, Kochi Blue Tigers broke the banks. KBT bid a whopping Rs 26.80 lakh for Samson out of their Rs 50 lakh budget. That’s 53% of the entire squad budget. However, with India touring Australia in October and India’s busy cricket schedule during that time, it is unlikely that Sanju Samson will be available to play in KCL 2025.

Vaibhav Suryavansham!

Watching Vaivhav Suryavanshi seems like watching the Sooryavansham movie on repeat on a cable channel. He comes to bat, smashes every bowler in every match. In the India U19 vs England U19 Youth ODI series, a 14-year-old Suryavanshi smashed a 52-ball century. That was the fastest Youth ODI ton by any. In other words, a U14 boy bullied a bunch of 19-year-olds with 13 fours and 10 sixes. The Rajasthan Royals wonderkid, who hammered a 35-ball century in IPL 2025, hammered 78-ball 143 in the 4th Youth ODI against England.
