England cricket team coach Brendon McCullum has decided to stay back in England and travel across the country to scout talent for the white-ball squads during The Hundred. His decision to do so comes after the former New Zealand cricketer was sacked as the Test team coach. Fresh off a series win against India, Baz has now decided to use The Hundred as a platform to scout future talents for the team’s white-ball setups. The Hundred will commence from July 21 onwards.
McCullum to scout talent from The Hundred
As per Cricinfo, McCullum said that he would be around The Hundred to watch some of England’s best in action. The ex-New Zealand cricketer claimed that it was best for him as a white-ball coach to be present to witness a tournament where not only players in England’s squad will be in action but also future talents who can potentially play for the country will also be scrutinised.
“I’ll be around for The Hundred, I think it’d be great to see some of England’s premier white-ball tournament. If you’re the white-ball coach, I think it’s good to be around for that, seeing not just the guys who are in this squad, but also some of the next talent perform under the brightest lights of The Hundred tournament. I think it’d be good to be able to see that up close over the next four weeks or so. I’ll look to try and get around some of those games and see that, and hopefully we’ll see some more talent,” McCullum said.
The former Kiwi cricketer heralded the Three Lions into the new ‘Bazball’ era after taking over as head coach in 2022. Despite showing promising signs at the start. ENG’s performance under McCullum witnessed a downward spiral since 2024, as the team managed lost 13 and won 12 Tests.
McCullum said that he will work in collaboration with the new England Test coach, in terms of sharing knowledge and resources.
“Collaboratively, I think. Once the new coach is put in place, I think we’ll have a good conversation around everything. Ultimately, as long as everyone wants what’s right for English cricket, then there’ll be some give and take on certain things, and that’s just the way it is,” McCullum added.
