PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2026: The defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, are in the IPL 2026 playoffs. They are the first team to do so with a 23-run win over Punjab Kings at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala. Punjab Kings could only manage to post 199/8 in a 223-run chase, losing their sixth consecutive match. Shashank Singh tried his bit with 27-ball 56 but it was not enough. Earlier, Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bowl. Both teams made two changes to their playing XIs, with Rajat Patidar missing the contest for RCB.
The win helped RCB consolidate their place at the top of the IPL 2026 Points Table with 18 points from 13 matches. Punjab remained 4th, for now, with 13 points from as many matches.
Kohli-Venkatesh power RCB to 222/4
Sent to bat, Royal Challengers Bengaluru lost Jacob Bethell in the powerplay again. However, Virat Kohli partnered with Devdutt Padikkal for a 76-run stand, helping RCB post 61/1 in the powerplay. Padikkal departed for 45 off 25 in the 10th over. But Kohli added another 60-run stand with Venkatesh Iyer to give Punjab no chance of a comeback. With Kohli departing in the 15th over for 58 off 37 balls, Venkatesh Iyer unleashed. He smashed 73 off 40 balls, laced with 8 fours and 4 sixes to add a 65-run stand with Tim David (28 off 12), scoring 54 runs in the death overs. That partnership helped RCB post 222/4.
Powerplay costs Punjab the match
To chase down 223-run target, Punjab Kings needed a good powerplay. However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck twice to dismiss both their destructive openers. Shreyas Iyer also extended his lean run with Rasikh Salam Dar removing him in the 4th over. With that, PBKS could only manage 49/3 in the powerplay.
Cooper Connolly and Suryansh Shedge steadied the ship with a 43-run stand. But Connolly (37 off 22) perished in the 8th over. Shedge followed him in the 11th over for 35 off 22. But with Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis on the crease, Punjab still had hopes. The two added 67 runs but then Stoinis Josh Hazlewood trapped his Australian teammate LBW for 37 off 25 in the 17th over to dent PBKS’ hopes. Shashank waged a lone battle with 27-ball 56. In the end, Punjab ended up with 199/8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/38) was the architect, while Rasikh Salam Dar bagged 3/36.
For Punjab Kings to qualify for the playoffs, they now need a lot of results go their and watch out for results of Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.
