MI vs SRH, IPL 2026: Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen help Hyderabad chase down 244 to condemn Mumbai

Follow live updates of Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026, Match No. 41 from Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

MI vs SRH, IPL 2026: Sunrisers Hyderabad juggernaut marches on as they win five matches in a row. They blew Mumbai Indians bowling attack to pieces, chasing down 244 at the Wankhede Stadium, the highest chase at the venue and fourth-highest chase in Indian Premier League history. Travis Head (76 off 30), Heinrich Klaasen (65 off 30), Abhishek Sharma (45 off 24) and Salil Arora (30 off 10) were the heroes as SRH chased down the target in just 18.4 overs.

Earlier, Ryan Rickleton smashed an unbeaten 123 off 55 balls to help Mumbai Indians post 243/5. He gave Mumbai a flying start in the powerplay with Will Jacks (46 off 22), scoring 78/0. After a 93-run stand, that stand broke with Jacks falling. Suryakumar Yadav did not last long as he departed for 5. After that, Rickleton partnered with Naman Dhir and Hardik Pandya for two half-century stands to post the highest total at the Wankhede in IPL. Earlier, Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to bowl. Rohit Sharma continued to miss out with an injury, while Quinton de Kock also missed out with a wrist injury. Robin Minz made his MI debut.

Ryan Rickleton siezes opportunity

Even an hour before the match, Ryan Rickleton was not confirmed to play. It was Quinton de Kock who was supposed to open for Mumbai Indians. But a wrist injury forced Mumbai to change plans and call Rickleton back. The South African seized the opportunity with both hands. The opening stand clicked as Rickleton teamed up with Will Jacks to score 78 runs in the powerplay.

Even as Will Jacks departed in the 8th over, Rickleton shouldered on, bringing up his half-century in the same over. With Naman Dhir, he added a 55-run stand and then a 56-run stand with Hardik Pandya. Rickleton brought up his century in the 15th over off 44 balls, the fastest by a Mumbai Indians batter. Thanks to Rickleton’s unbeaten 123 off 55 balls, Mumbai Indians posted 243/5, their highest total in IPL.

Perfect chase by Sunrisers Hyderabad

Despite their big totals and aggressive approach, Sunrisers Hyderabad are not synonymous with chasing down big totals. But on Wednesday, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head set the platform so that SRH could chase down a target of 244. Head and Abhishek smashed 92 in the powerplay and added a 129-run opening stand before the Indian opener fell for  45.

While Mumbai Indians took control back with three quick wickets in the middle-overs, Heinrich Klaasen poured cold water on MI’s hopes. Even as Travis Head fell for 76 off 30 balls in the 10th over, Klaasen partnered Nitish Reddy for an 80-run stand off just 40 balls to take the match away from Mumbai. Klaasen remained unbeaten on 30-ball 65, while Salil Arora applied the finish touch with a 10-ball 30 to chase the 244-target down in just 18.4 overs.

Mumbai’s bowling attack was blown into pieces with Jasprit Bumrah conceding 54 runs for no wickets. None of the bowlers managed to keep the economy rate under 10. Trent Boult was the closest with 10.20.

MI vs SRH Match Preview: Sunrisers Hyderabad

29/04/2026 18:42

Sunrisers Hyderabad, meanwhile, are flying. Five wins from eight, third in the standings, and on a four-match winning run. Abhishek Sharma is back to his best with 380 runs at a strike rate of 212.29, averaging 54.28 with one century and three fifties. Ishan Kishan (312) and Heinrich Klaasen (349) are also among the runs.

The bowling has been the bigger story, though. Eshan Malinga is the leading wicket-taker for SRH this season with 14 wickets at 18.21, and Pat Cummins is back, even if his return spell against RR was modest in a high-scoring contest. SRH have a settled, balanced look about them. MI don't.

MI vs SRH Match Preview: Mumbai Indians

29/04/2026 18:32

There's no soft-pedalling where MI are right now. Five defeats in the first seven matches, ninth on the IPL 2026 Points Table with four points and a NRR of -0.736, and their most recent loss, a 103-run defeat to CSK, was the heaviest in MI's IPL history by margin of runs. For a side with four players from India's T20 World Cup-winning squad, the no-shows from Hardik Pandya (3 wickets and 97 runs) and Suryakumar Yadav have been the loudest issue.

With Trent Boult (1 wicket), Deepak Chahar (1 wicket) and Shardul Thakur also failing to find wickets, Mumbai's problems have been compounded. Add Mitchell Santner's IPL ending injury, and they don't have enough options on the bench to choose from. The only good news is the return of Will Jacks. Former captain Rohit Sharma has been out with a hamstring injury since April 12, but he has been batting in the nets. There's at least a chance that Rohit may return. They badly need it.

Wankhede Stadium Pitch Report

29/04/2026 18:15

The Wankhede has done what the Wankhede usually does this season: produce runs, and lots of them. But there's been a slight twist worth noting. Earlier in the IPL 2026 cycle at this venue, the surface played a touch slower than the typical Wankhede track, with the first-innings average sitting around 179 rather than the usual 200-plus.

That trend has shifted in the past couple of fixtures, with the wicket coming back closer to its true reputation. The surface at Wankhede this season has been firmly batter-friendly, with small boundaries and a true pitch making it one of the most preferred batting venues in the country. The ball comes nicely onto the bat, stroke play is easier than at most grounds, and high scores are the norm.

The conditions on Wednesday should support that pattern. Temperatures will sit between 30°C and 34°C with humidity at around 62% — hot, sticky, and likely to bring dew into play in the second innings. That, combined with Wankhede's strong recent record of chases, means the toss-winning captain will almost certainly bowl first.

MI vs SRH Head to Head

29/04/2026 18:01

The historical numbers say this is MI territory, even if recent meetings tell a different story. Across 25 IPL meetings between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, MI lead 15-10. At Wankhede specifically, MI have won seven of the nine matches against SRH.

However, SRH have clinched only two of their last nine matches against MI, which makes the broader head-to-head look pretty one-sided. But SRH will feel they're primed to end a three-match losing streak against MI when they take the field at Wankhede tonight.

  • Matches Played: 25
  • Mumbai Indians won: 15
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad won: 10
