Heinrich Klaasen, born on 30 July 1991, is a prominent South African cricketer known for his contributions to the South African national cricket team, particularly in limited overs formats. His cricketing journey saw him representing the Northerns cricket team in the 2015 Africa T20 Cup. In February 2021, Klaasen made history by leading South Africa for the first time in a T20I match. One of his notable achievements came on 21 March 2023, during a match against West Indies, where he smashed his second ODI century in just 54 balls.

Career 

Domestic career 

In August 2017, Klaasen was named in Nelson Mandela Bay Stars’ squad for the T20 Global League, which Cricket South Africa postponed until November 2018, eventually canceling it. He joined Rajasthan Royals in the IPL on 2 April 2018. Later, he was part of Titans for the 2018–19 season and Durban Heat for the Mzansi Super League T20 tournament in October 2018. Royal Challengers Bangalore bought him in the 2019 IPL auction, and he played for Toronto Nationals in the 2019 Global T20 Canada and Glasgow Giants in the Euro T20 Slam, which got canceled. Klaasen joined Tshwane Spartans for the 2019 Mzansi Super League. Released by Royal Challengers Bangalore, he was named in Northerns’ squad for the 2021–22 season. Sunrisers Hyderabad acquired him for the 2023 IPL. In February 2023, he scored a century for Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20 tournament, and in May 2023, he made his maiden IPL century. In July 2023, Klaasen became the first player in Major League Cricket to score a century for the Seattle Orcas.

International career 

In February 2017, Klaasen was named in South Africa’s Test squad for their series against New Zealand but didn’t play. In February 2018, he joined South Africa’s ODI squad against India, making his debut on 7 February 2018, replacing an injured Quinton de Kock. He won his first man of the match award in the fourth ODI against India. He debuted in T20Is against India on 18 February 2018, scoring his maiden fifty in the second T20I, earning him the man of the match accolade.

In February 2018, he was selected for South Africa’s Test squad against Australia but didn’t play. In August 2019, he made his Test debut against India, replacing the injured Rudi Second. Klaasen scored his first ODI century against Australia on 29 February 2020. In January 2021, he captained the South Africa T20I squad against Pakistan and later led the team again in April 2021 due to an injury to Temba Bavuma. He was also named in South Africa’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. On 8 January 2024, Klaasen retired from Test cricket after playing just 4 matches since his debut in 2019.
