Domestic career
Coetzee debuted in List A cricket for Free State during the 2018–19 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge on October 14, 2018. His Twenty20 debut came for Knights in the 2018–19 CSA T20 Challenge on April 12, 2019. He made his first-class debut for Knights in the 2019–20 CSA 4-Day Franchise Series on October 7, 2019. Coetzee was selected for South Africa’s squad for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in December 2019. He was also named in Free State’s squad for the 2021–22 cricket season in South Africa in April 2021. Coetzee joined Rajasthan Royals for the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) as a replacement for Liam Livingstone on May 1, 2021.
In the 2024 IPL auction, Mumbai Indians acquired Coetzee for ₹5 crores. Additionally, in June 2023, he was included in the Texas Super Kings roster for the inaugural season of Major League Cricket.

In June 2022, Coetzee was named in South Africa’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their tour of England to play against England and Ireland. He made his Test debut against West Indies on 28 February 2023, having been selected in South Africa’s Test squad earlier that month. In March 2023, he debuted in One Day Internationals (ODIs) during the series against West Indies, where he took three wickets in the second ODI. Coetzee was then included in South Africa’s squad for the 2023 Cricket World Cup, making his maiden World Cup appearance at 23.
