Gerald Coetzee acknowledged the threat posed by young Punjab Kings batsman Ashutosh Sharma, who played a fiery knock of 61 runs off just 28 balls. “He [Ashutosh] batted well,” Coetzee said. “We had a clear discussion during the timeout about our tactics for the death overs.” He emphasized the importance of adapting their bowling plans based on what they observed during Punjab’s innings. “We learned from their innings and the mistakes we made in our own batting,” he explained. “They took pace off the ball effectively, so we decided to do the same.”
Gerald Coetzee’s crucial wicket of Ashutosh Sharma
Coetzee’s dismissal of Ashutosh Sharma proved to be a turning point in the match. “That was a big wicket,” he said. “He was taking the game away from us, so getting him out was crucial.”
He revealed that he used the large boundaries at the Mullanpur Cricket Stadium to his advantage. “We realized it’s a big ground, and he didn’t hit the ball that cleanly,” Coetzee explained. “It was just a slower delivery that didn’t give him room to clear the boundary.”
Adapting to Bowling Roles
Gerald Coetzee, who has taken 12 wickets in just seven matches this season, also spoke about his preferred bowling phases. “I’ve mostly bowled in the middle overs in my career,” he said. “But as a modern cricketer, you need to be flexible and adapt to whatever role you’re given.”
While he enjoys bowling in the middle overs, he’s relishing the challenge of the death overs. “As someone who loves taking wickets, the death overs are a great opportunity,” he concluded.
