India at Tokyo Olympics: Ace India shuttler P.V. Sindhu shared a picture with her family at the airport before departing for Tokyo. She will open her campaign at the Tokyo Olympics against Polikarpova Ksenia of Israel on July 25. Sindhu, who had lost to Spain’s Carolina Marin in the 2016 Olympics final, has been clubbed in an easy Group J, also comprising Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi who is ranked 34th in the world, while Polikarpova is 58th.
The 6th seed will represent India in women’s singles and is expected to put up a good show in the tournament. P.V Sindhu rose to fame when she won a silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics, making her the first Indian woman to win an individual silver.
With no Carolin Marin- gold medallist at the 2016 Rio Olympics, P.V Sindhu is considered the defending champion this time at the Olympics. She’s has been awarded an easy draw in group stages but will have to face Tai Tzu-Ying in the semi-final potentially.

P.V. Sindhu on taking expectations in a positive way
The Rio 2016 Olympics silver medallist will be carrying the hopes of the country as she bids to bring home a medal from Tokyo Games 2020, slated to get underway from July 23. “There is a lot of expectations and responsibility this time. Back then (2016) I was one of the athletes but now expectations are a lot more. It is important to stay focused and just play your game and give your best. Obviously, you shouldn’t think about what others say because that would add extra pressure.
“I take it in a very positive way because am sure people want to show their love and support. They want that medal back in the country but I make sure to be focused all the time,” she told ANI.
Talking about the Olympics and preparation around it, PV Sindhu said: “I am really excited and looking forward. Yeah, it is just nine days away and we have waited a long time now. We will be leaving on Saturday. I am prepared and all set. It’s just I have to play my best and play the game there.“
Thank you so much sir 🙏🏼🙏🏼 https://t.co/JnvwDYbcpG
