India at Olympics – Sania Mirza at the 2008 Beijing Olympics: At the age of 20, Sania Mirza made her Olympics debut at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She was the poster girl of Indian tennis, and she qualified for both women’s singles and doubles at the Olympics. She started her campaign in women’s doubles by partnering with Sunitha Rao, and they got knocked out in the round of 32. In singles, she pulled out of her match due to a wrist injury, which also took her into depression for 3-4 months.

India at Olympics – Sania Mirza at the 2012 London Olympics: At the 2012 London Olympics, there were many team selection issues. Sania Mirza was very keen to partner with Rohan Bopanna since she played with him on tours, and the rapport was great between them. The federation did the exact opposite of what she asked for, and they announced Leander Paes as her mixed doubles partner. To date, she feels that she was used as bait during the selections. In women’s doubles, she was paired with Rushmi Chakravarthi, and they got knocked out in the first round against Chinese Taipei. Coming to mixed doubles, unhappy Sania Mirza partnering with Leander Paes lost to Belarus in the second round.

India at Tokyo Olympics – Sania Mirza at the 2016 Rio Olympics: At the 2016 Rio Olympics, this was the closest moment Indian tennis came to winning a medal after the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Sania Mirza partnering with Rohan Bopanna, cruised into the semi-final comfortably, and seeing their form, it looked like they will bring home India’s second medal in tennis, but they lost both semi-finals and bronze medal match. In women’s doubles, Sania Mirza partnering with Prarthana Thombare lost in the first round.

India at Tokyo Olympics – Sania Mirza at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics: At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Sania Mirza will be partnering with Ankita Raina in women’s doubles event. Looking at her age and Olympics coming only once in four years, this might be her last chance to win a medal at the Olympics.
