Will India go foreign again? Justin Langer ‘curious’ to replace Rahul Dravid as India head coach

Langer's experience and achievements present a compelling case, but the BCCI's final decision will determine whether India welcomes a foreign coach back into the fold after a decade.

The race to replace Rahul Dravid as India head coach has taken an intriguing turn, with former Australian opener and coach Justin Langer expressing his interest in the coveted position.

BCCI opens door, Justin Langer considers

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently invited applications for the head coach role, following Rahul Dravid’s contract expiry after the T20 World Cup in June. While Dravid’s future remains uncertain, Langer has emerged as a potential candidate.

“Well, I am curious,” Langer confessed to The Times of India when questioned about his interest in the job. “I’ve never ever thought about it,” he continued, “but coaching the Indian team would be an extraordinary role.” Langer’s curiosity stems from the immense talent pool he’s witnessed in India.

Open process for India Coach selection

The BCCI, under Secretary Jay Shah, has clarified that Rahul Dravid, like any other applicant, will need to submit a formal application and go through the selection process if he desires to retain the head coach position.

This aligns with an apparent lack of enthusiasm from Dravid to continue beyond his initial contract.

Foreign Coach a Possibility: Enter Justin Langer?

Jay Shah has also hinted at the possibility of appointing a foreign coach, a position last held by Duncan Fletcher in 2014.

Since then, India has relied on homegrown legends like Anil Kumble, Ravi Shastri, and Rahul Dravid. Langer’s candidacy could be a game-changer if the BCCI chooses to explore the overseas route.

Justin Langer credentials: Strong Contender

Justin Langer boasts a phenomenal playing career with 105 Tests under his belt, amassing over 7,600 runs. His coaching experience is equally impressive, having successfully led the Australian team for nearly four years.

He played a pivotal role in reviving Australian cricket after the 2018 Sandpapergate scandal, even guiding them to their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2021.

First IPL stint with LSG

Justin Langer’s current role as head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL offers a glimpse into his coaching style. While LSG remains in playoff contention, their approach has raised questions.

Langer himself acknowledges the difference between playing and coaching, highlighting the lack of control a coach has over factors like selection and external perception.

India Cricket Team next coach? Wait Continues

With Justin Langer expressing his interest and the BCCI keeping their options open, the wait for India’s next head coach intensifies.

Langer’s experience and achievements present a compelling case, but the BCCI’s final decision will determine whether India welcomes a foreign coach back into the fold after a decade.
