Jaydev Unadkat’s slow-ball symphony: The secret weapon of SRH’s bowling attack

Sunrisers Hyderabad's emphatic victory serves as a reminder of the effectiveness of utilizing slow bowling on conducive surfaces. Jaydev Unadkat's exceptional bowling performance, built on a foundation of strategic variation and unpredictability, is a blueprint that other teams can learn from as the IPL season progresses.

Sunrisers Hyderabad‘s convincing victory over the Chennai Super Kings was a masterclass in utilizing slow bowling on a sluggish pitch. Their bowlers, particularly pacer Jaydev Unadkat, emerged as the heroes, weaving a web of deception with their slower deliveries.

SRH’s Slower Ball Strategy

After electing to bowl first, skipper Pat Cummins capitalized on the sluggish surface by unleashing a barrage of slower balls from his pace attack. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shahbaz Ahmed got them off to a good start, dismissing key CSK batsmen early on.

Shivam Dube threat neutralized

Just when CSK seemed to be gaining momentum with Shivam Dube at the crease, Jaydev Unadkat stepped up. A cleverly disguised slower-ball bouncer sent Dube packing, halting CSK’s progress.

Unadkat continued to torment the CSK batsmen, showcasing an array of slower deliveries throughout his spell. Off-cutters, back-of-the-hand variations, and leg-cutters, all delivered with deceptive pace, kept the batsmen guessing. This strategy proved highly effective, restricting CSK to a manageable total of 165/5.

Jaydev Unadkat: Adaptability is Key

In the post-match press conference, Jaydev Unadkat highlighted the importance of adapting to the pitch conditions. He acknowledged that the slow wicket at Hyderabad was ideal for utilizing slower deliveries, maximizing their effectiveness. However, he emphasized that this wouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all approach. Unadkat stressed the need for adaptability, tailoring bowling strategies to suit different surfaces throughout the IPL.

Sunrisers Hyderabad star pacer while talking about bowling on the surfaces in Hyderabad said:

“Yes, from what we have seen so far, both the wickets were such that the slow ball was sticking to the surface. It’s about adapting to the conditions. Conditions were suitable for those type of deliveries and also the opposition. I would say yes, maybe it’s a venue where there are big square boundaries so you can utilise it as a bowler and that’s why we have been planning those type of deliveries. It doesn’t mean, it’s the only strategy we are gonna use in this tournament. It will depend on on what surface we are playing. Adapting to the surface will be crucial.”

Unpredictability: A Bowler’s Weapon

Jaydev Unadkat went on to discuss the importance of keeping batsmen off-guard. He believes that in today’s T20 cricket, bowlers need to be unpredictable in terms of pace and line. A mix of slow bouncers, wide yorkers, and deliveries into the leg-side keeps batsmen guessing and prevents them from settling into a rhythm.

This unpredictability is a key weapon in a bowler’s arsenal, allowing them to gain the upper hand in the battle against aggressive batsmen.

Jaydev Unadkat in the post-match press conference while talking about bowling on the SRH bowling plans said:

“From my point of view, even if surface had played differently, or it would be the wicket where the lot of runs were being scored. The moment it was decided that two bouncers per over can be used and that’s how pacers everywhere will tackle that problem. Slow bouncers are working these days because all batters are trying to hit straight and muscle the ball out of the park. Then you have got to use those variations in T20. You need to use everything you have – slow bouncer, wide, straight in legs and that’s how you can keep the batsman guessing. As a bowler these days, you have got to be unpredictable in terms of what your line and pace going to be.”
