Lance Klusener behind KL Rahul’s axe from India squad for T20 World Cup?

LSG coach argues that the frequent loss of wickets around Rahul forced him to adopt a more cautious approach, stifling his aggressive batting style.

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) find themselves on the brink of elimination from the 2024 IPL season, despite KL Rahul decent showing with the bat. Assistant coach Lance Klusener has come to the captain’s defense, suggesting a lack of support from the batting order has hampered Rahul’s natural game.

As a result, KL Rahul has found no place in India’s T20 World Cup squad.

KL Rahul numbers in IPL 2024

While strike rate has been a talking point for KL Rahul throughout the season, the numbers don’t paint the full picture according to Lance Klusener. Currently the IPL’s seventh-highest run scorer with 465 runs, Rahul’s strike rate sits at 136.36.

KL Rahul – curbed attacking instincts

Klusener believes KL Rahul’s leadership responsibilities haven’t been the issue. Instead, he argues that the frequent loss of wickets around Rahul forced him to adopt a more cautious approach, stifling his aggressive batting style.

He’s had some great performances over the tournament,” Lance Klusener said. “He’s had to rebuild a lot of the times. We’ve lost wickets around him. We haven’t allowed him to play his natural game.”

Frustration at Missed Opportunities in IPL 2024

While acknowledging Rahul’s decent batting performance, Klusener admits the captain might be “a little frustrated with the amount of runs that he scored.” This frustration likely stems from the team’s overall performance and missed opportunities.

LSG consistency issues

Lance Klusener refrained from assigning blame, but highlighted a lack of consistency across the entire team as a key factor in their struggles. “The bowling group plays a huge role in winning T20 games,” he said. “But there’s no blame at anyone’s door.”

He continued, “It’s just a consistency as a group that has led us down this year. We haven’t scored enough runs and again, we haven’t taken enough wickets as well.”

Fading IPL 2024 Playoff Hope

LSG’s playoff hopes remain faint, hinging on a win against the Mumbai Indians today coupled with favorable results from other matches. Despite the precarious situation, Klusener insists they’re “not resigned to any fact” and remain focused on securing a victory.

The upcoming match against the Mumbai Indians will be the final group stage encounter for both teams, marking a crucial moment in LSG’s season.
