After Sanju Samson with the bat, Akeal Hosein starred with the ball, bagging four wickets for 17 runs to bowl Chennai out for 104. Earlier, it was a Sanju Samson show as he single-handedly took Chennai Super Kings to 207/6 in 20 overs with his 2nd century this IPL 2026. After 73/2 in the powerplay, Samson made sure he was there till the end of the innings, even as wickets kept falling around him. Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to bowl first. MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma are still injured and missed yet another match.
The win helped Chennai Super Kings to climb to 5th spot with 6 points from 7 matches, thanks to the net run rate boost. Mumbai dropped down to 8th after the loss.
The Sanju Samson show
Chennai Super Kings have won every time Sanju Samson has scored this season. And the trend has continued with Samson playing one of the best knocks of his career to win it for Chennai. Despite Ruturaj Gaikwad (22 off 14) falling early, Samson kept attacking the Mumbai bowlers. He showed respect to Jasprit Bumrah, but then unleashed against Hardik Pandya with 4, 6 and a 4 in the 4th over. That unlocked CSK’s innings and with Sarfaraz Khan also chipping in with 14 runs, CSK closed the powerplay with 73/2.
In what was a one-man show in the next 14 overs, Sanju Samson shouldered all the scoring responsibilities, putting up small partnerships with Sarfaraz, Dewald Brevis and Kartik Sharma. He batted through the innings to remain unbeaten on 101 off 54 balls, getting to his 2nd century of IPL 2026 with a four off the last ball.
Akeal Hosein topples Mumbai
If Sanju Samson was the hero of CSK’s batting, Akeal Hosein lit it up with the ball. He scalped at least one wicket in each of his four overs but it was his powerplay bowling that broke MI’s backbone. He removed Danish Malewar to begin his hunting and then bamboozled Naman Dhir with a stunner in his 2nd. In his first spell, he bagged 2 wickets for 7 runs, including a maiden. Mukesh Chaudhary then cleaned up Quinton De Kock to reduce Mumbai to 11/3 in the powerplay.
Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma tried to rebuild with a sluggish 56-ball 73-run partnership. But Akeal Hosein returned in the 12th over to break that stand, removing Tilak Varma. In the next over, he dismissed Suryakumar Yadav to finish with 4/17. After that, Noor Ahmad joined the party as he removed Hardik Pandya and Sherfane Rutherford with a twin strike in the 13th over to seal the match for Chennai Super Kings. In the end, Mumbai were bowled out for 104 to suffer their biggest defeat of IPL.
