Jos Buttler could call coaches Paul Collingwood & Trescothick to field in IND vs END 2nd ODI; here’s why

The India vs England second one-day international is undergoing in Cuttak, with the hosts having a 1-0 lead.

Paul Collingwood is considered one of the best-ever fielders in England cricket, if not the best. Well, English fans might get lucky enough to see him in action once again—that too, on the international stage once again! This is because Collingwood and batting coach Marcus Trescothick are on the substitution list as fielders for England in the ongoing second ODI against England in Cuttack. The visitors are in a crisis because of multiple injury concerns and hence Jos Buttler will have his coaches to call upon if needed.

Massive injury concerns for England, coaches included in sub list

Jos Buttler made three changes for the second ODI after a comprehensive defeat in Nagpur. All three of Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, and Jacob Bethell were put on the bench. Curiously, Bethell endured a hamstring injury and may be out of the last ODI in Ahmedabad as well. He made a gritty fifty in the last game too. Meanwhile, Jamie Smith, who is also part of the series, is also nursing an injury, meaning only Archer and Carse are on the bench and fit to field if needed. Hence, the Brendon McCullum-coached side had to put other names on the fielding sub list and they had no other options apart from assistant and batting coach Paul Colingwood and Marcus Trescothick.

It’s not uncommon for former players to lend a hand on the field, even if it’s just as a sub-fielder. Paul Collingwood, for instance, has done it a few times before – in a 2014 ODI against New Zealand and a 2017-18 Ashes tour match. He and Marcus Trescothick have even helped out with drinks duty during their coaching stints. According to ICC rules, teams can name up to four substitute fielders at the toss, so it’s all above board!
