LSG in Turmoil? KL Rahul future discussed ‘behind closed doors’ after ‘not-so-happy’ public chat

Sources close to the LSG camp revealed that the public discussion centered around the team's batting strategy.

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) find themselves embroiled in controversy following a public exchange between team owner Sanjiv Goenka and captain KL Rahul after a crushing 10-wicket defeat to the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

A video circulating on social media captured an animated discussion between Goenka and Rahul, raising concerns about the team’s atmosphere and Rahul’s future with the franchise.

Disappointing performance in IPL 2024 by LSG

The on-field display itself was a major source of disappointment for LSG. Batting first on a high-scoring pitch in Hyderabad, they could only manage a total of 165/4.

In stark contrast, SRH openers chased down the target in a mere 9.4 overs, with both batsmen scoring at a blistering pace. KL Rahul‘s own batting performance, with a strike rate of 87.87, further fueled speculation about the team’s batting approach.

LSG ownership questions team intent

Sources close to the LSG camp revealed to Indian Express that the public discussion centered around the team’s batting strategy. Report suggested that the owners questioned the team’s intent and expressed dissatisfaction with their overall approach at the crease.

The heavy defeat also significantly impacted LSG’s net run rate, making their playoff qualification dependent on the outcome of other matches.

Business as usual for KL Rahul but…

Despite the tense atmosphere following the public exchange, the team resumed training the next day.

While KL Rahul reportedly went about his usual routine during official team meetings, discussions regarding his future with LSG continued ‘behind closed doors’ as per the daily.

History again by Sanjiv Goenka?

This incident reignited memories of Goenka’s past decisions as owner of the Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS). In 2016, after a disappointing season, Goenka removed MS Dhoni as captain and replaced him with Steve Smith. With LSG currently placed sixth in the points table and their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, questions arise about whether Goenka might be considering a similar move with Rahul.

Uncertain future awaits KL Rahul

The public exchange between Sanjiv Goenka and KL Rahul has cast a shadow over LSG’s season. Whether Rahul remains captain for the remaining matches and beyond is a question that only time will answer. One thing is certain: the team needs to address these internal issues and find a way to turn things around if they hope to salvage their IPL campaign.
