‘Give them a chance’: Gavaskar urges Team India to give warm-up game to juniors

India is slated to take on Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy starting from 22nd November

The India Cricket Team has previously canceled their practice match against India A in Australia. And now this has prompted former India great Sunil Gavaskar to give chances to the juniors in the team to play a practice game on foreign soil. Gavaskar has also urged that the juniors play warmup matches between two consecutive test matches.

This Team India has quite a few youngsters who will be touring Down Under for the very first time. And they will have no idea about the pace and bounce of those pitches. Gavaskar claimed that young batters should get warm-up games to understand the pace and bounce better on foreign soil.

Gavaskar wants youngsters to get warm-up matches

“I really do believe that they should have a warm-up game. In the gaps between Test matches, they really should have warm-up games. Not necessarily for the senior players. But for the junior players who have never played in Australia before. For the Yashasvi Jaiswals, the Sarfaraz Khans, the Dhruv Jurels, all these young batters. Even against an Australia A team or a state side like Queensland. Juniors must be given the opportunity to get used to the bounce and pitches in Australia,” Gavaskar told The Indian Express.

Gavaskar went on to explain that young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, and even Sarfaraz Khan deserve some warmup matches. The reason for this is very simple – They haven’t played a single game in Australia and thus won’t know much about the pitches.

The former Indian great explained that while the seniors in the team won’t need much warm-up time, these practice games against Australia A or even state teams like Queensland will help the youngsters get some much-needed pitch acclimatisation.

India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (WK), R Ashwin, R Jadeja, Mohd. Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar.
