January 12 was a moving day as far as cricketing updates were concerned. We got a revised outline for the IPL 2025 as announced by BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla. Talking about BCCI, we finally have our Jay Shah replacement, Devajit Saikia, who is now BCCI’s new secretary. On Saturday, we had India’s squad for the five T20Is against England, where Ishan Kishan missed out. Meanwhile, will Jasprit Bumrah miss the entire ICC Champions Trophy 2025? On that note, let us look at all the major cricketing stories from January 12 (Sunday).

Goodbye for Ishan Kishan?

BCCI named India squad for the five T20Is against England, with the series starting on January 22. While Sanju Samson was obviously the first-choice keeper, as a backup keeper was Dhruv Jurel, whose name came out of nowhere. However, Ishan Kishan was once again ignored. Kishan’s performance in both the Vijay Hazare Trophy and SMAT was subpar. In the domestic T20 tournament, he managed to score just 161 runs in six matches, while he amassed 316 runs in 7 matches in the List A tournament. His only chance of securing a spot in the Indian team was in the T20I side. But that couldn’t happen.

No Bumrah for ICC Champions Trophy?

There might be a bad news coming in for the Indian fans. Jasprit Bumrah, who was the talismanic player at the BGT, is likely to miss the group stages for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The premium pacer sustained an injury to his back during the IND vs AUS 5th Test. As per Indian Express, Bumrah is expected to be fit only in the first week of March, which means he is likely to miss the group stage matches of Champions Trophy 2025. He is expected to head to the NCA in Bengaluru, where the medical team will monitor the swelling on his back and his recovery.

Shreyas Iyer new PBKS captain!

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) took a unique move as they used the reality TV show Bigg Boss platform to announce their captain for IPL 2025. Salman Khan announced the appointment of Shreyas Iyer as their next skipper. He is the first IPL title-winning captain of the franchise. Apart from him, Yuzvendra Chahal and Shashank Singh also attended the show.

New BCCI Secretary & Treasurer

On Sunday, Devajit Saikia and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia were elected as the secretary and treasurer, respectively, at the BCCI Special General Meeting. They were unopposed, as no one else filed for the positions left vacant by Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar. Shah vacated his role after becoming the ICC chairman last month, and Shelar stepped down after becoming a cabinet minister in Maharashtra. BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla confirmed the news of the new appointments on Sunday.

Strict action by BCCI on senior players

It seems the BCCI is looking for repercussions after India’s back-to-back Test series defeats. They first endured a Test clean sweep against New Zealand before losing the Border Gavaskar Trophy after a decade. Now, BCCI will not allow players to miss bilaterals, a leeway that was previously given primarily to senior players. According to a PTI report, until a player provides a valid medical reason, they can’t decide which tournament they feature in. This goes for both international and domestic cricket.
