In what could be a big blow for India, Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss the group stage matches of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The premium pacer sustained an injury to his back during IND vs AUS 5th Test that saw him leave the SCG midway through the game to undergo scans. While there was suspense over the extent of Bumrah’s injury, the selectors seem to have finally gotten an update on the bowler and his availability for the marquee tournament finally.
Jasprit Bumrah likely to miss Champions Trophy group stage
As per Indian Express, Bumrah is expected to be fit only in the first week of March, which means he is likely to miss the group stage matches of Champions Trophy 2025. He is expected to head to the NCA in Bengaluru where the medical team will monitor the swelling on his back and his recovery. The bowler will have to play two or three practice games before receiving a fitness clearance from the NCA to rejoin the Indian side for CT 2025.
“He (Bumrah) will be going to NCA for his rehabilitation. The initial report says he doesn’t have a fracture but has swelling on his back. So the NCA will monitor his recovery and he will be there for three weeks. But even after that, he will have to play a match or two, even if they are practice games organised to check his match fitness,” a source said.

As per the report, the selectors were apprised of Bumrah’s present condition while they gathered on Saturday to pick the squad for IND vs ENG T20Is. While the deadline for the teams to submit their provisional squads for CT 2025 is January 12, the BCCI is expected to seek an extension from the ICC to make their announcement. Bumrah has a history of back injuries, with his last one saw him go under the knife and be out of action between 2022 and 2023.
Bumrah had a hectic calendar year in 2024. After participating in IPL 2024, he was a part of the T20 World Cup winning side. He then went on to participate in the Test series against Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia. Overall, he was the most overworked Indian pacer last year.
