Former KKR captain Shreyas Iyer has been officially announced as the new leader of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. The announcement came during a unique reveal on the popular reality show Bigg Boss 18, where megastar Salman Khan announced the major development.
Not a surprising move by PBKS: Shreyas Iyer only deserving candidate
This is a big news for Punjab Kings fans! The team has just announced Shreyas Iyer as their new captain, and it’s a game-changer. Iyer’s got the winning touch, having led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title last season. That kind of championship-winning experience is exactly what PBKS need to take their game to the next level.
And it’s clear the team is committed to making it work, having invested a whopping ₹26.75 crore in Iyer’s services during the IPL Mega Auction 2025. That’s a significant chunk of change, but if anyone’s worth it, it’s Iyer. He has that winning mentality and could be a face of the team for years to come. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who’s worked with Iyer before, thinks he’s an excellent choice. “He’s a great guy and a great player,” Ponting said. “He’ll be an excellent leader for our team.” High praise indeed from a cricket legend like Ponting.
But Iyer’s appointment is just the start of a major overhaul for the Punjab Kings. They entered the IPL 2025 mega auction with an exorbitant purse of Rs 110.50 crore. They splashed Rs 18 crore each on Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh, with the duo forming the main bowling group alongside Yash Thakur, Lockie Ferguson, and Marco Jansen. They retained just two uncapped players in Shashank Singh (Rs 5.50 cr) and Prabhsimran Singh (Rs 4 cr).
