Chief selector to discuss Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli ‘future’ in T20s post WC

Following World Cup 2023, Team India's focus shifts to T20 WC with the selection committee set to prepare a 20-player core group for the mega event in US, West Indies.

India Cricket Team transition plan will get the green signal post World Cup 2023. It’s the incoming chief selector who will discuss the “future” with Virat Kohli Rohit Sharma besides a number of senior players including Ravichandran Ashwin. Ajit Agarkar is the frontrunner to take over the chief selector post. He has applied for the role after quitting Delhi Capitals assistant coach job.

There have been a lot of talks about the transition from the shortest format of the game for two stalwarts of Indian Cricket. While Virat Kohli is 34, Rohit Sharma is 36 and age is not on their side.

“One of the jobs of the chief selector is to speak to the players on their future plans. Rohit and Virat are not immune to that. Yes, we would have wanted to continue as long as they want. But all great players have a time to consider their plans. Playing three formats and IPL won’t be an easy job,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

With the focus shifting to T20s and Tests immediately after the WC, Hardik Pandya will formally take over T20 & ODI captaincy. Like the ODI WC, the plan is to have a core team of 20 players for T20 World Cup 2024. And it’s unlikely that either of Rohit would feature in the plans. But there is still a possibility for Kohli considering his fitness.

However, it will be clear after the chief selector and the BCCI top brass have a word with him on that front. It is likely that following WC, Kohli and Rohit will voluntarily relinquish one format, giving chances to the newcomers.

Naturally, ODIs will once again take a backseat. As per current plans, India will play 61 T20s in the next FTP cycle. Most of them will be in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup 2024 in October in the US and West Indies.

“Obviously, the focus shifts to T20s after the World Cup. Since 2007, we have not won the T20 WC and it is a priority and a matter of prestige now since IPL has been growing at a rapid pace. It does not look good if we don’t win the T20 WC with the kind of players coming through the IPL. The selection committee will make a blueprint on that soon after the 50-over WC,” the official added.

Ajit Agarkar having played T20s and coached in the IPL is the perfect selector to lead a T20 reboot. While Kohli and Rohit are two big stars, there will be many seniors who will need to decide on that front.
