Raducanu, the 19-year old Tennis star from UK rose to prominence after winning the US Open title last year, becoming the first-ever qualifier in the Open era to win a grand slam title. She defeated Leylah Fernandez in straight sets in the final, scripting history by winning the Grand Slam title without dropping a set.
However, just before the US Open last year, Raducanu scored A-level grades in Maths and Ecomomics at her high-school exams and this has prompted the Cambridge University to give her an offer to study economics.
Raducanu’s grandmother Niculina Raducanu spoke to the Daily Mail from her home in Bucharest, Romania and said “I know she wants to go to university to study economics as soon as she has the time. Cambridge University offered her the possibility to take classes there. They said she is welcome any time.”
She also revealed that Emma told her about Cambridge after winning the US Open, in one of their twice-weekly video calls. ‘It is my wish for her to continue her education but it is also her wish. She will do both Tennis and university but needs to be strong in order to do both,’ she said.
With her prize money earnings and sponsorship deals, Emma Raducanu is said to be worth £10million. But her 89-year old Grandma says, “Money comes and goes, but an education will never go away.”
Meanwhile, Raducanu is racing against time to be fit for Wimbledon. She faces a tricky opponent in World No.46 Alison van Uytvanck in the first round on Monday.
