Sumit Nagal becomes 1st Indian to win a match at Monte Carlo Masters, reaches career-high 80 rank

Nagal had reached the main draw in Monte Carlo for the first time yesterday after his 3-set battle against Facundo Diaz Acosta.

The new and confident Sumit Nagal is showing his true potential. The top-ranked Indian men’s singles tennis player has created history, becoming the first tennis player from the nation to win a match at the Monte Carlo Masters. Playing against World No. 38 Matteo Arnaldi, the Indian came from a set down to seal a 3-set victory (7-5, 2-6, 4-6).

Playing against the talented 23-year-old Italian, Nagal broke serve six times, while Arnaldi managed to do it just four times. The Indian tennis ace dominated the Italian on both serve and return, winning 103 points to his 94. He lost the first set 7-5, but he managed to come back and seal the next two sets, losing just six games.

Nagal is joining what is his career-best season. He made the second-round run at the Australian Open 2024, defeating ATP Top 30 Alexander Bublik on his way and becoming the first Indian to win a main draw match at the Australian Open in over 30 years. He then won a Challenger in Chennai and breached the ATP 100 for the first time in his career.

Now, playing on his favorite surface, Nagal has reached a career-high rank of 80 and become the first Indian to win a match in Monte Carlo. Now, he’ll look to go even further when he faces seventh seed Holger Rune in the Round of 32.
