India’s best singles tennis player by a margin, Sumit Nagal lost his chance to make it to his maiden ATP Masters main draw, as he lost his final qualifying match against South Korea’s Hong Seong-Chan 6-2, 2-6, 6-7 (4-7), at the Indian Wells Masters. Earlier, in the first round, he had defeated the American wildcard Stefan Dostanic 6-2, 6-2.
There wasn’t much wrong that Sumit Nagal did on the day of the second qualifying match, but couldn’t go the distance in the tie-breaker after the third set, against Chan. Meanwhile, in the first qualifier round Chan had beat compatriot Kwon Soon-woo 6-3 6-3 to set up a clash with Nagal.
The Indian, ranked 101st in the world currently, bowed out, not before claiming 10 crucial ranking points though. In fact, apart from the ranking points, he also pocketed USD 14,400 prize money, as per a report in Firstpost.
