T20 World Cup 2024 is a fair bit away but the BCCI and the selectors have already planning for the next big T20 event. After two consecutive disappointing world cup campaigns, selectors are looking beyond the seniors. While a T20 Reboot has silently begun with Hardik Pandya taking charge, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are all set to make way for a new T20 pair. Shubman Gill is the new all format opener and with the emergence of Yashasvi Jaiswal in IPL 2023, India Cricket Team is beginning to shape up for the mega event in USA and the West Indies in 2024. “For sure, the exciting talents that are coming up are a huge boost for the team. Jaiswal has been on the radar after his fine domestic returns and will be in the scheme of things. It is too early to say whether it is the end of the road for Rohit and KL. But the ways things are going and the dip in the form the two have had, it’s fair to say that we need a new opening pair,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

T20 World Cup 2024: End of days for Rohit Sharma & KL Rahul? Yashasvi Jaiswal & Shubman Gill set to be new T20 opening pair after IPL 2023 exploits

Why IPL 2023 could be end of road for Rohit-Rahul in T20s?

  • KL Rahul is already out of the tournament having suffered a thigh injury.
  • But he was in the midst of a storm regarding his poor strike rate.
  • While a sluggish start in ODIs can be salvaged, in the fast-paced T20s, his numbers don’t look good.
  • In 9 games, Rahul scored 274 runs at a decent T20 average of 34.23.
  • But his poor strike rate of just 113.22 has created a debate. Combining that with his international form, future doesn’t look good for him.
  • India’s Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma on the other hand has struggled massively with his form.
  • In 11 matches so far in IPL, Rohit has scored just 191 runs at 17.36 and a strike rate of 124.84.
  • With Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring 575 runs from 11 innings at an average of 52.27 and a strike rate of 167.15, he is breaking down the door for an India call-up.
  • On Friday, Jaiswal played a ruthless 98-run knock including the fastest 50 of IPL history in just 13 balls.
  • But it was not one-off. It’s his powerplay batting that has excited selectors. He strikes at 178.83, the best among Indians.
  • Shubman Gill has also made a mark with 469 runs at an average of 46.90 and strike rate of 143.42.

With Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul both focusing on ODIs, selectors will pick Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill as the two openers on Ireland tour. If Jaiswal manages to maintain his form, it could be end of road in T20s for both Indian stars. “Ireland tour is where we can experiment as there won’t be many T20s. West Indies is another opportunity for us. So, if the selectors believe Jaiswal can do a good job, why not. We have to phase out the seniors sooner or later. But one must not forget Ishan Kishan. With Rishabh (Pant) out, Ishan is an important player for us and he will compete for a place for sure,” the BCCI official said.
