Ashwin returned to the Indian ODI side after a gap of four years but managed just a single wicket in the first two ODIs. He returned with the figures of 1/53 and 0/68 against South Africa.
“Ashwin strangely came back into India’s ODI plans for some reason. India paid a price for that. He played the two crucial games, did nothing much. (Yuzvendra) Chahal is also under the scanner. Prasidh Krishna needs to be backed a bit more. Also, in 50-overs, Mohammed Shami could be a good option,” Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo.

- R Ashwin will now look for an IPL contract after managing just 7 wickets in 13 matches.
- The senior bowler comes with an experience of 145 wickets to groom the youngsters.
- He bowls at an economy of 6.91 which makes him a worth pick at the IPL 2022 auction to keep the run rate in check during slog overs.
- He has managed to scalp just 15, 13 & 7 wickets in the last edition which points towards a decline. But he got a second life as he was called into India squad for T20 World Cup and then ODIs.
- Additionally, he also has the experience of leading IPL team in 28 matches with 12 victories.
- Thus, the 33-year-old is likely to be purchased at a base price at the mega auction. He had received Rs 7 crore by Delhi Capitals which is unlikely to be the case for the next IPL cycle.
- Meanwhile, reports have surfaced that R Ashwin wants to return to MS Dhoni’s CSK where he spent the initial phase of his IPL career.
