Dinesh Karthik last played for India back in 2019 in the ICC World Cup. His last T20 match was against Australia in Bengaluru in February 2019. Since then, the emergence of Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan has meant he has no place in the team.

- The only way, it could open up a door is injury to Rishabh Pant or Ishan Kishan.
- Even if Dinesh Karthik finishes as the Orange Cap holder of IPL 2022, it will be difficult to accommodate Dinesh Karthik.
- Ruturaj Gaikwad, another Orange Cap holder has got limited opportuinities.
- Even though Rohit Sharma has spoken about a finisher, he has mostly spoken about Hardik Pandya or Venkatesh Iyer doing the role as they could be fifth or sixth bowling options.
- Dinesh Karthik doesn’t fit into the plan, especially in a crucial tournament like T20 World Cup as there could be a maximum of 18 players in the squad.

Commentators Simon Doull and Matthew Hayden agreed. “The harsh reality is, there is no place (for DK). He has been excellent and hopefully, he will continue to be excellent. But where would you fit him in the squad?” Simon Doull said.
After IPL, India play South Africa in a five-match T20 series followed by England in England and the T20 Asia Cup and West Indies. Dinesh Karthik may not be a part of any of them as the focus is now on the next generation.
