India began chasing an easy target of 190 rather slowly. The first surprise was Shubman Gill opening with Shikhar Dhawan instead of KL Rahul, who will soon be departing for Dubai for the Asia Cup. But Shubman Gill once again ensured, no new ball practice for KL Rahul. Despite a slow start, scoring at under 4 runs an over in the powerplay, both Gill and Dhawan took charge.

India vs Zimbabwe 1st ODI Highlights:
- 13: This was India’s 13th consecutive win in ODIs against Zimbabwe.
- 192: This is India’s 2nd highest opening stand in a 10-wicket victory. The highest was 197, also against Zimbabwe in 1998.
- 1: This is India’s first victory under KL Rahul’s captaincy.
- 3: Shubman Gill smashed his 3rd half-century in his last four innings since his comeback to ODIs.
- 38: Shikhar Dhawan smashed his 38th ODI half-cnetury.
- 10: Shikhar Dhawan completed his 6,500 ODI runs, becoming 10th Indian batter to achieve the milestone.
Shikhar Dhawan got an early reprieve when Brad Evans dropped his catch when he was on 32. But then on, he never looked back. Dhawan, marked as a one-format player, continued in his elegant style but a notch slower than Rohit Sharma would have approved.
He scored an unbeaten 81 off 113 deliveries. His knock was laced with 9 boundaries. But at no point, he looked in a hurry. With no scoreboard pressure, he effortlessly managed to sail through Zimbabwe’s pace attack and later spin attack.
His strike partner Shubman Gill, however, was off to a rather rusty start, It took him time to get the rhythm back. But Zimbabwe’s bowling attack wasn’t potent enough to cause him any trouble other than occasional short balls. Once Dhawan reached his 38th ODI fifty, Gill took charge from the other end.
If he had scored at 70 strike rate before then, he went hammering against the likes of Brad Evans. He remained unbeaten on 82 off 72 deliveries. His knock included 10 4s and 1 six as India chased down the lowly target in 30.5 overs with 10 wickets remaining.

However, the platform was set by Deepak Chahar. The pacer, who returned to cricket after 6 and a half months on the sidelines with an injury, was exceptional. Although he looked a little rusty in the beginning, he found his rhythm back quickly. He bowled 7 overs on the trot and he kept troubling Zimbabwe batters with bounce, inswingers and outswingers.
It was his 3/27 that set the stage with Axar Patel doing the rest. The spinner bowled a brilliant spell of 3/24 to get rid off dangerous Regis Chakabva and Luke Jongwe.
Hero in the Bangladesh series, Sikandar Raza, also had no response as he was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna. But captain Regis Chakabva fought back with 35-run knock before he was undone by Axar Patel.
However, it was Brad Evans and Richard Ngarava who launched a late fightback. The two added a record 70-run stand for the 9th wicket to take the score to 189.
