England beat India by 100 RUNS: Chasing a modest target of 247, India were in trouble from the very first ball. In fact, it took Indian batters 24 balls to open their account as the first two overs went maiden. The five runs that came in the first four overs were all extras. But it was Topley who dealt the first blow. Rohit Sharma, who smashed 76 in the 1st ODI, departed for a duck nicking Topley’s delivery.
Shikhar Dhawan never looked settled and after playing 26 balls and scoring 9. But it was another Topley delivery that he followed on the leg side and nicked it to Jos Buttler. The next in line was Rishabh Pant, who was promoted to No 4 but the gamble fell flat. He departed off a full toss which should have ended up as a boundary only to end up in Philip Salt’s hands.
With India reduced to 29/3, Virat Kohli had a golden chance to guide India to victory as he had done in the past multiple times. But his wretched run continued. Despite a good start, he nicked a David Willey delivery to Buttler, reducing India to 31/4.
Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya tried to hold off the England storm with a 42-run stand. But Reece Topley once again came to the fore. He cleaned up Suryakumar to all but end India’s hopes. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja added 29 runs but the former gave away a catch going against Moeen Ali.

- 15: India have continued their wait for a win at Lord’s in ODIs. The last time India won at Lord’s was back in 2007.
- 3: Two Indian batters were dismissed for a duck. Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and Prasidh Krishna were the three batters.
- 6/24: Reece Topley bowled his career-best figures of 6/24. It is the best bowling spell by an Englishman against India. He eclipsed Darren Gough’s record of 5/44.
- 146: It was India’s 2nd lowest total against England. India;s lowest against England is 132/3, also at Lord’s.
There was a late fightback from Mohammed Shami (23) and Jadeja with a 39-run stand. But Topley got the better of Shami with a slower delivery. Jadeja soon departed and ended India’s all hopes. In the end, India were bowled out for just 146.
Earlier, Yuzvendra Chahal was India’s star bowler with 4/47. Although England started well Chahal ripped England’s middle-order apart with the best bowling figure by an Indian against England in ODIs. Moeen Ali tried his best to fight back but Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya hunted in packs to dismiss England for 246 in 49 overs. While the total seemed a modest one, Topley made sure, it wasn’t.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and has opted to bowl first against England at Lord’s. The best news is that Virat Kohli has made a comeback from a groin injury. That means Shreyas Iyer has been dropped. India are gunning for a series win.
As for team news, India have retained the winning combination barring the return of Virat Kohli. Shreyas Iyer misses out as he returns. For England, they have kept the same side that lost the 1st ODI by 10 wickets.
