In a recent move aimed at protecting the youth, Iraq has officially banned the widely-used online gaming platform Roblox. The Iraqi Communications Ministry announced this decision on October 19, 2025, citing significant concerns over child safety and the platform’s violation of social and moral values within the country.

The ministry highlighted that Roblox contains content deemed inappropriate, including sexual themes, profanity, and instances of online blackmail targeting minors. One of the primary concerns raised was the platform’s direct communication features, which expose young users to potential exploitation, cyber-extortion, and other harmful interactions. These direct chats between users allow for unmonitored exchanges, increasing the risk of abuse for children and adolescents.

This ban aligns Iraq with several other nations in the region and beyond, which have already restricted or removed access to Roblox and similar platforms. Governments are increasing their regulatory oversight amid growing apprehension about children’s exposure to inappropriate content and online predators through digital gaming spaces.

Roblox, known for allowing users to create and share games, boasts a large international user base, with roughly 100 million active daily users, and approximately 40% of them being under the age of 13. This demographic has attracted scrutiny worldwide, leading the platform to propose measures such as disabling direct chat unless age is verified and restricting adult communication with minors in certain regions.

The Iraqi government’s decision aims to preserve social order and moral values while ensuring the safety of internet users, particularly young ones. This action also reflects ongoing debates globally about how to effectively regulate online gaming environments to safeguard vulnerable users.

While the ban impacts Iraqi gamers and developers who enjoyed creative engagement on Roblox, officials emphasize the importance of such protective measures amid rising concerns over the psychological and social impacts of excessive screen time and harmful online interactions. This step by Iraq highlights the balancing act between the benefits of digital innovation in gaming and the urgent need for robust protections in the digital age.
