F1 is set to introduce new qualifying rules at the upcoming Hungarian GP. Earlier, FIA was planning to introduce a new qualifying format in Imola GP, which then faced an inadvertent delay. However, it is all set to be introduced in the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Hungarian GP 2023 is set to take place between 21st-23rd July. This is going to be another one in the line of the ongoing European leg of races. Moreover, another thrilling prospect of the race is that Daniel Ricciardo is all set to make his F1 return. The Aussie will be replacing Nyck De Vries in the Alpha Tauri team. After ousting the young Dutchman a week ago, Ricciardo will be putting on his racing helmet for the remainder of the season at the Faenza team.
However, the most anticipated part of the upcoming race is still the new qualifying pattern set to be introduced by FIA. Since Imola, F1 has visited five circuits, starting with Monaco and the latest being Silverstone. However, none of them suited the requirements as well as the Hungaroring.

F1 teams to witness reduction in total tire compound numbers
Back in May, reports from Motorsport Magazine suggested that Formula 1 and Pirelli have chosen the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 21-23 as the evaluation opportunity for the revised qualifications. Now, as the race week has arrived, credible sources have put a stamp on this news.
Recently, Pirelli motorsports boss Mario Isola talked about this new pattern. Notably, is referred to as “Alternative Tyre Allocation”. This means that the teams will see an overall reduction of slicks through the weekend from 13 to 11. “At Imola, we will be testing a new regulation that requires teams to use a different type of compound for each of the three sessions, with the hards fitted for Q1, the mediums for Q2, and the softs for Q3,” said Isola.
“This means a reduction – from 13 to 11 – of the sets of dry tires that each driver has available for the entire event, therefore decreasing the environmental impact generated by the production and transport of the tires,” added the Italian.
As of now, the F1 paddock will shortly arrive at Hungaroring for the upcoming Hungarian GP weekend. Going by the itinerary, the newly inducted Qualifying rules will be implemented on 22nd July, and it will surely be interesting to see how that plays out.
